If your skin suddenly feels tight, dry, red, or sensitive — and nothing seems to help — your skin barrier might be damaged. It's one of the most common (and most misunderstood) skin problems out there.
Here's what's happening, why it matters, and how to get your barrier back in good shape.
What Is the Skin Barrier?
Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin — technically called the stratum corneum. Think of it like cling wrap: it keeps moisture in and irritants out. When it's working properly, your skin feels soft, plump, and comfortable. When it's damaged, that seal breaks, and you get a cycle of dryness, irritation, and sensitivity that's hard to break out of.
What Damages It?
The most common culprits:
- Over-exfoliating. Too much acid, too often. Your barrier needs time to recover between uses.
- Harsh cleansers. Anything that leaves your skin squeaky-clean is usually stripping your barrier along with the dirt.
- Environmental stress. Cold wind, dry air (especially indoors in winter), and UV exposure all wear your barrier down over time.
- Too many actives at once. Mixing retinol, vitamin C, AHAs, and BHAs without a recovery strategy is a recipe for a broken barrier.
How to Tell If Your Barrier Is Damaged
Signs include: tightness that doesn't go away after moisturising, flakiness or rough patches, sudden sensitivity to products you've used before, redness or stinging, and skin that looks dull or grey rather than healthy.
How to Fix It
The answer is almost always: simplify and soothe.
Step one: strip back your routine. Drop any exfoliants, retinol, or strong actives. Damaged barrier + strong actives = more irritation. Give your skin a week or two with only the basics.
Step two: switch to a gentle cleanser. Our Daily Wash is formulated to clean without stripping. No sulphates, no harsh detergents — just a soft cleanse that doesn't leave your skin screaming.
Step three: layer in hydration. Start with a hydrating mist to prep skin, then follow with something that actually seals moisture in. The Prebiotic Face Mist is specifically formulated to support the skin's microbiome — the friendly bacteria that are part of a healthy barrier. Follow it with the Barrier Cream, which is free from fragrance and formulated for sensitivity, to lock everything in.
Step four: be patient. A damaged barrier can take 2–4 weeks to repair. During this time, less is more. No new products. No experimenting. Just consistency with gentle basics.
Once Your Barrier Is Back
You can slowly reintroduce actives — one at a time, a few nights a week. Always pair strong ingredients with barrier-supporting products. The Collagen Barrier Restore Cream works well as a recovery layer for nights when you do use actives — it's rich, restorative, and specifically designed to support the barrier.
The goal is a routine your skin can live with long-term, not one that gets results for a week and then causes a flare-up. Boring, consistent, and gentle wins every time.
