Hyaluronic Acid Can Make Your Skin Drier. Here's When.

Hyaluronic acid is in almost every product marketed as hydrating. It's in four of ours. It is also the ingredient people most often use in a way that leaves their skin worse off than before.

Not because it's a bad ingredient. Because of how it actually works, and because nobody puts that part on the bottle.

What it is

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant — a molecule that attracts water and holds onto it. Your body already makes it. It's in your skin, your joints, your eyes. The version in a skincare bottle is doing one job: pulling water towards the surface of your skin and keeping it there.

You've probably seen the line about it holding up to a thousand times its weight in water. That's true, and it's the least useful fact about it. The question that matters is: where is it pulling that water from?

The part nobody mentions

A humectant takes water from whatever is nearest. If the air around you is humid, it takes it from the air, which is exactly what you want.

If the air is dry — a flat with the heating on in January, a plane, an air-conditioned office, most of northern Europe between October and March — there isn't much water in the air to take. So it takes it from the only other source available: the deeper layers of your own skin. It draws that water up to the surface, where it evaporates.

You get twenty minutes of plumpness and skin that feels tighter by lunchtime than it did when you started.

This is what's happening when someone says hyaluronic acid doesn't work for them. It's working. It's just been asked to make water out of nothing.

Two rules, and that's the whole fix

Apply it to damp skin. Not dry, not dripping. Damp. If you put a hyaluronic serum onto a dry face, you have handed it an empty room and asked it to find water. If your face is still wet from cleansing or from a toner, there is water sitting right there for it to grab. This single change is the difference between the ingredient working and the ingredient backfiring, and it costs you nothing.

Then seal it. Hyaluronic acid holds water. It does not stop water leaving. That's a different job, done by a different kind of ingredient — an occlusive, like shea butter or an oil, which sits on top and slows evaporation. Humectant first, occlusive over it. If you apply a hyaluronic serum and then walk away, you've filled a bucket with a hole in it.

Where this shows up in a routine

In practice it means the order matters more than the products do.

Cleanse. Don't dry your face properly — pat it, leave it damp. Then Hydrating Toner, which is rose water and hyaluronic acid and is designed to go onto wet skin. What about multi-weight hyaluronic acid?

You'll see this on labels, including ours. It means the formula uses several molecular sizes rather than one. Larger molecules stay at the surface and hold water there; smaller ones travel a bit further down. It's a genuine improvement over a single weight, and it is not a substitute for applying the thing to damp skin. Nothing is.
